Your Surgeon

Nicholas Evennett

MD MBChB BHB PgCertHE FRACS FAANZGOSA

I’m a New Zealand born and trained Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon, with a special interest in complex surgery, revision procedures, and minimally invasive techniques. I work at both Auckland City Hospital and Ascot Hospital, where I’ve been part of advancing care for some of the most challenging gastrointestinal conditions.

I completed my MBChB in 2002 with a first-class academic record (A+ average). In 2005 I moved to the Netherlands, and then to London, where I completed a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2008 on Novel Markers of Intestinal Injury. During this time, I also completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Education through St George’s University of London—reflecting a long-standing commitment to surgical teaching and mentorship.

After returning to New Zealand, I completed my FRACS (General Surgery) in 2012, followed by three years of post-fellowship training in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery, including two years within the AANZGOSA post-fellowship programme, thus becoming a fellow and obtaining my FAANZGOSA. In 2015, I trained at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, gaining further experience in minimally invasive oesophagectomy (MIO)—a technique I went on to help introduce to New Zealand.

Since 2016, I’ve held consultant positions at Auckland City Hospital (New Zealand’s principal tertiary and quaternary referral centre) and in the private sector at Ascot Hospital.

My practice includes:

Minimally Invasive Oesophagectomy (MIO) for cancer and benign disease

Laparoscopic Gastrectomy for cancer and benign disease

Bariatric surgery, including revision procedures and high-BMI patients

Benign upper GI surgery (e.g. reflux, hiatus hernia, achalasia)

General and acute surgery, including gallbladder and hernia procedures

Leadership & Teaching

I currently serve as:

Service Clinical Lead of Upper GI Surgery at Auckland City Hospital

Supervisor of Surgical Training

Committee member of AANZGOSA (post-fellowship training in Upper GI surgery)

Committee member of NZAGS (General Surgery SET training programme)

Clinical Advisory Board representative for Bariatric and General Surgery at Allevia Hospitals

These roles allow me to contribute to surgical education, clinical governance, and the future direction of Upper GI and Bariatric services in both public and private settings.

Outside the Operating Room

I’m a father, a drummer, a runner, and an unapologetic car enthusiast. I believe that curiosity, humility, and balance outside the hospital make for better care inside it.

If you’re seeking expert surgical care delivered with precision, collaboration, and long-term thinking—I’d be happy to help.

Your Anaesthetist

Thida Evennett

MBChB BSc FANZCA GCertBiostat

I’m a New Zealand trained Specialist Anaesthetist with a background in both public and private healthcare, and a passion for delivering safe, calm, and patient-centred care. My clinical practice spans a wide range of specialties, with a particular focus on anaesthesia for complex Upper GI, Bariatric, Orthopedics, and Urological surgery

I completed my medical training at the University of Auckland, followed by anaesthetic training across New Zealand’s major teaching hospitals. I became a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (FANZCA)in 2019. Since then, I’ve worked in both public and private sectors, including positions at Auckland City Hospital and in some of the country’s most well-established private surgical practices.

I believe anaesthesia is not just about putting people to sleep—it’s about building trust, anticipating needs, and being present for patients at some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives. My bespoke practice is guided by empathy, vigilance, and a commitment to excellence.

My particular interests include:

Anaesthesia for complex Upper GI and Bariatric procedures

Improving Patient Experience in Private Healthcare

Perioperative Medicine and Patient Optimisation

Leadership & Teaching

I contribute to simulation training and the teaching of Anaesthetic trainees and Specialist Anaesthetists, as well as multidisciplinary education. I have a strong interest in quality improvement and have led initiatives focused on patient safety, patient experience and communication.

Together with my husband, I co-founded EVEN8 — a care model grounded in the simple belief that every patient matters, and that they deserve not only expert technical care, but also clarity, compassion, and continuity.

Outside the Operating Room

I am a mother of two, a writer at heart, and a strong advocate for intentional living. From structuring theatre lists to packing lunchboxes, I believe that small, thoughtful choices make a meaningful difference — and that all forms of care are worth doing well.

As an Anaesthetist, I take a whole-person approach and value partnership throughout the surgical journey. It would be a privilege to care for you.
